Substitution undoes the chain rule. Let u be the inside expression, find du = u′ dx, and rewrite the whole integral in u. Integrate with the power rule, then put the original expression back in place of u and add + C. If du is off by a constant factor, divide by that factor.

How to solve it: a worked example

Integrate using substitution.

  1. Start∫(5x − 6)4 dx
  2. Let u be the insideu = 5x − 6, du = 5 dx
  3. Rewrite in u15∫u4 du
  4. Integrate and substitute back125(5x − 6)5 + C
  5. Answer125(5x − 6)5 + C

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Forgetting to divide by the constant from du.
  • Leaving the answer in terms of u.
  • Forgetting + C.

FAQ

How do you choose u?

Pick the inside of a composition whose derivative also appears (up to a constant). In ∫2x(x² + 1)³ dx, u = x² + 1 and du = 2x dx.

What if the constant doesn't match?

Adjust it. For ∫(3x + 1)⁴ dx, du = 3 dx, so dx = du/3 and the integral is (1/3)∫u⁴ du = (3x + 1)⁵/15 + C.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix integration by substitution with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
