The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus: ∫ from a to b of f(x) dx = F(b) − F(a), where F is any antiderivative of f. Find F (no + C is needed), substitute the upper limit, substitute the lower limit, and subtract in that order. The average value of f on [a, b] is that integral divided by b − a.

How to solve it: a worked example

Evaluate.

  1. Start∫62 (4x − 5) dx
  2. Find an antiderivativeF(x) = 2x2 − 5x
  3. Upper limit minus lower limitF(6) − F(2) = 42 − (−2) = 44
  4. Answer44

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Subtracting F(b) − F(a) in the wrong order.
  • Forgetting the minus signs when substituting a negative lower limit.
  • Dividing by b + a instead of b − a for the average value.

FAQ

Do you need + C in a definite integral?

No. The constant appears in F(b) and F(a) and cancels when you subtract.

Is a definite integral always the area?

Only when the function stays above the x-axis. Parts below the axis count as negative, so the integral is a net (signed) area.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix definite integrals with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
