Worksheet variations

Polynomials are continuous everywhere, and rational functions are continuous wherever the denominator isn't zero. At such a point the limit is just the function's value: substitute x = a and simplify. Check the denominator first; if it is zero, substitution doesn't work and another method is needed.

Easylimx→4 (4x2 − 2x − 7)PolynomialsMediumlimx→3 5x + 5x + 7Rational functionsHardlimx→6 5x + 1xNegative values and fractions

How to solve it: a worked example

Evaluate each limit.

  1. Startlimx→−2 (x2 + 2x + 3)
  2. Polynomials are continuous: substitute(−2)2 + 2(−2) + 3
  3. Then= 3

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Substituting into only some of the x's.
  • Squaring a negative value without parentheses.
  • Substituting when the denominator is zero.

FAQ

When does direct substitution work?

Whenever the function is continuous at the point, which includes every polynomial and any rational function whose denominator isn't 0 there.

What if substitution gives a number over 0?

Then the limit doesn't exist as a finite number; the function grows without bound near that point, often toward a vertical asymptote. If it gives 0/0, factor first.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix limits by direct substitution with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
