Worksheet variations

Set the two functions equal to find where they cross; those x-values are the limits of integration. On the interval, decide which function is on top by testing a point between them. The area is the integral of (top − bottom), which is always positive.

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the area of the region enclosed by the two curves.

  1. Starty = x2 + 4x, the x-axis
  2. Set the functions equal to find the limitsx2 + 4x = 0, x = −4, x = 0
  3. Top minus bottom0 − (x2 + 4x) = −x2 − 4x
  4. Integrate between the limits∫0−4 (−x2 − 4x) dx = 323
  5. Answer323

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Integrating bottom − top and getting a negative area.
  • Guessing the limits instead of solving for the intersections.
  • Dropping a sign when subtracting the bottom function from the top one.

FAQ

How do you know which function is on top?

Test a point between the intersections. Whichever function gives the larger value there is on top for that whole interval.

Why might you get a negative area?

You subtracted top from bottom the wrong way. Area between curves is ∫(top − bottom) dx, which is always positive.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix area between curves with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
