Easy: Left and right sums

  1. 1.Approximate the area under f(x) = 3x2 + 1 from x = 2 to x = 12 with 5 strips, using a right Riemann sum.
  2. 2.Approximate the area under f(x) = 3x2 from x = 0 to x = 4 with 4 strips, using a left Riemann sum.
  3. 3.Approximate the area under f(x) = 2x2 + 4 from x = 1 to x = 9 with 4 strips, using a right Riemann sum.
  4. 4.Approximate the area under f(x) = 2x2 + 3 from x = 1 to x = 11 with 5 strips, using a right Riemann sum.
  5. 5.Approximate the area under f(x) = x2 + 1 from x = 2 to x = 7 with 5 strips, using a right Riemann sum.
  6. 6.Approximate the area under f(x) = x2 from x = 1 to x = 5 with 4 strips, using a left Riemann sum.

Worksheet variations

Split the interval into n equal strips of width Δx. A Riemann sum adds the areas of rectangles: their heights come from the left ends, the right ends or the midpoints of the strips. The trapezoidal rule uses trapezoids instead: Δx ÷ 2 × (first + 2 × each middle value + last).

How to solve it: a worked example

Approximate the area under the curve.

  1. StartApproximate the area under f(x) = 2x2 + 1 from x = 1 to x = 9 with 4 strips, using a right Riemann sum.
  2. The width of each stripΔx = 9 − 14 = 2
  3. The x-values used3, 5, 7, 9
  4. Add the areas2(19 + 51 + 99 + 163) = 664

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using n + 1 rectangles instead of n.
  • Forgetting to multiply by the width Δx.
  • Doubling the first and last values in the trapezoidal rule.

FAQ

What is the difference between left, right and midpoint sums?

They differ in where each rectangle's height is measured: at the left end, the right end or the middle of each subinterval.

When does a left sum overestimate?

When the function is decreasing: the left end of each subinterval is the highest point, so each rectangle sticks out above the curve.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix riemann sums and the trapezoidal rule with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
