Worksheet variations

A circle with center (h, k) and radius r has the equation (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r². The signs inside the brackets are the opposite of the center's coordinates, and the right side is the radius squared. From general form, group the x-terms and the y-terms and complete the square for each.

EasyWrite the equation of the circle with center (−6, 6) and radius 1.Write the equationMedium(x + 6)2 + (y − 9)2 = 36Center and radius from standard formHardx2 + y2 + 8x − 16y + 31 = 0Complete the square

How to solve it: a worked example

Write the equation, or find the center and radius.

  1. StartWrite the equation of the circle with center (8, 9) and radius 1.
  2. Put the center in (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r²(x − 8)2 + (y − 9)2 = 12
  3. Simplify(x − 8)2 + (y − 9)2 = 1
  4. Answer(x − 8)2 + (y − 9)2 = 1

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Keeping the center's signs: center (3, −2) gives (x − 3)² + (y + 2)², not (x + 3)² + (y − 2)².
  • Writing r instead of r² on the right side, or giving r² as the radius.
  • Adding the completing-the-square numbers to only one side.

FAQ

How do you read the center from (x − 3)² + (y + 2)² = 16?

The center is (3, −2): take the opposite of each number inside the brackets. The radius is √16 = 4, not 16.

Why complete the square for the general form?

x² + y² − 6x + 4y − 3 = 0 hides the center and radius. Completing the square in x and in y turns it back into standard form: (x − 3)² + (y + 2)² = 16.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix equation of a circle with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
