Worksheet variations

Product rule: (fg)′ = f′g + fg′, the derivative of the first times the second plus the first times the derivative of the second. Quotient rule: (f/g)′ = (f′g − fg′)/g², low d-high minus high d-low, over the denominator squared. The order matters in the quotient rule because of the subtraction.

Easyf(x) = (2x − 5)(3x + 7)f′(x) = Product of two binomialsMediumf(x) = (2x − 1)(−4x2 − 5x − 3)f′(x) = Product of a binomial and a trinomialHardf(x) = x + 12x + 1f′(x) = Quotients

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the derivative. Simplify.

  1. Startf(x) = (−6x − 9)(−4x + 7)f′(x) =
  2. Product rule: f′g + fg′−6(−4x + 7) + (−6x − 9)−4
  3. Multiply out and combine48x − 6
  4. Answer48x − 6

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplying the two derivatives together: (fg)′ is not f′g′.
  • Reversing the subtraction in the quotient rule.
  • Forgetting to square the denominator.

Tip: tick “Step-by-step answer key” in the generator to print each step for marking.

FAQ

Is the derivative of a product the product of the derivatives?

No. (fg)′ = f′g + fg′. For x²·sin x, the derivative is 2x sin x + x² cos x, not 2x cos x.

How do you remember the order in the quotient rule?

"Low d-high minus high d-low, over low squared": (f/g)′ = (g·f′ − f·g′)/g². The subtraction makes the order matter.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix the product and quotient rules with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
