Worksheet variations

As x → ∞, only the highest powers matter. If the bottom has the higher degree, the limit is 0. If the degrees are equal, the limit is the ratio of the leading coefficients. If the top has the higher degree, the function grows without bound: the limit is ∞ or −∞, depending on the signs.

How to solve it: a worked example

Evaluate each limit, or write ∞ or −∞.

  1. Startlimx→∞ 6x2 − 2x + 5x2 + x − 3
  2. Compare the leading terms6x2x2
  3. Equal degrees: divide the leading coefficients6
  4. Answer6

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using the constant terms instead of the leading coefficients.
  • Saying the limit is 1 when the degrees are equal.
  • Missing the sign change for odd powers as x → −∞.

Tip: tick “Step-by-step answer key” in the generator to print each step for marking.

FAQ

Why do only the highest powers matter?

As x gets huge, the highest-power terms grow much faster than the rest, which become negligible in comparison.

How do limits at infinity relate to horizontal asymptotes?

If the limit as x → ∞ or x → −∞ is a number L, the line y = L is a horizontal asymptote of the graph.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix limits at infinity with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
