Factor first. A factor that cancels from the top and bottom makes a hole, not an asymptote. The zeros of the remaining denominator are the vertical asymptotes. For the horizontal asymptote compare degrees: a bottom-heavy function has y = 0; equal degrees give y = (leading coefficient on top) ÷ (leading coefficient on the bottom).

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the vertical and horizontal asymptotes, and any hole.

  1. Startf(x) = −3x − 33x − 1
  2. Vertical: the denominator is zero3x − 1 = 0, x = 13
  3. Horizontal: equal degrees, divide the leading coefficientsy = −33 = −1
  4. Answervertical asymptote: x = 13; horizontal asymptote: y = −1

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Calling a cancelled factor a vertical asymptote instead of a hole.
  • Using the zeros of the numerator as vertical asymptotes.
  • Taking the horizontal asymptote from the constant terms instead of the leading coefficients.

FAQ

What's the difference between a hole and a vertical asymptote?

Both come from zeros of the denominator. If the factor cancels with the numerator, the graph has a hole there; if it doesn't, the graph has a vertical asymptote.

How do the degrees decide the horizontal asymptote?

If the bottom's degree is higher, y = 0. If the degrees are equal, y = the ratio of the leading coefficients. If the top's degree is higher, there is no horizontal asymptote.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix asymptotes and holes of rational functions with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
