Worksheet variations

A zero of p(x) is an x-value that makes p(x) = 0. In factored form, set each factor equal to zero. If one zero r is known, divide by x − r (synthetic division) and factor the quadratic that is left. Some cubics factor by grouping: take a common factor from the first two terms and from the last two.

How to solve it: a worked example

Find all the zeros.

  1. Startp(x) = (x − 5)(x + 2)x
  2. Set each factor equal to zerox = 5 or x = 0 or x = −2
  3. Answerx = 5 or x = 0 or x = −2

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Giving 3 as the zero of (x + 3) instead of −3.
  • Forgetting the zero from a factor of x on its own.
  • Stopping after dividing, without factoring the quadratic.

FAQ

How do you use one known zero to find the others?

Divide by x − r for the known zero r (synthetic division works well). The quotient is a quadratic you can factor or solve with the quadratic formula.

What is factoring by grouping?

Pair the terms and factor each pair: x³ + 2x² − 9x − 18 = x²(x + 2) − 9(x + 2) = (x + 2)(x² − 9) = (x + 2)(x + 3)(x − 3).

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix finding zeros of polynomials with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
