Worksheet variations

The binomial theorem gives (a + b)ⁿ as a sum of terms C(n, k)·aⁿ⁻ᵏ·bᵏ, where the coefficients C(n, k) are the numbers in row n of Pascal's triangle. The powers of the first term count down from n while the powers of the second count up from 0. To find one term, pick the k that gives the right power of x.

How to solve it: a worked example

Expand, or find the coefficient asked for.

  1. Start(x − 2)3
  2. Row of Pascal's triangle1, 3, 3, 1
  3. Multiply each by the powers of both termsx3 − 6x2 + 12x − 8
  4. Answerx3 − 6x2 + 12x − 8

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Forgetting to raise the coefficient a or the constant b to its power.
  • Using the wrong row of Pascal's triangle.
  • Dropping the sign of a negative constant on odd powers.

FAQ

Where do the coefficients come from?

They are the numbers in row n of Pascal's triangle, also written C(n, k). For (a + b)⁴ they are 1, 4, 6, 4, 1.

How do you find one term without expanding everything?

The term with bᵏ is C(n, k) aⁿ⁻ᵏ bᵏ. In (2x + 1)⁵, the x³ term uses k = 2: C(5, 2)(2x)³(1)² = 10 × 8x³ = 80x³.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix the binomial theorem with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
