Worksheet variations

For a 2 × 2 matrix the determinant is ad − bc: the product down the main diagonal minus the product down the other one. For a 3 × 3 matrix, expand along the first row: each entry times the 2 × 2 determinant left when its row and column are crossed out, with the signs +, −, +.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Adding the diagonal products instead of subtracting.
  • Forgetting the minus sign on the middle term of a 3 × 3 expansion.
  • Crossing out the wrong row or column for a minor.

FAQ

How do you find a 2 × 2 determinant?

Multiply down the main diagonal and subtract the product of the other diagonal: det[a, b; c, d] = ad − bc.

Why do the signs alternate when expanding a 3 × 3 determinant?

Expansion along the first row uses the pattern +, −, +: each entry times its 2 × 2 minor, with the middle term subtracted.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix determinants of 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 matrices with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
