Worksheet variations

To compare two rates, change each one to a unit rate: miles per hour, or dollars per pound. Then compare the unit rates. The greater speed is faster; the lower unit price is the better buy.

FAQ

Which is the better buy: 3 pounds for $4.50 or 5 pounds for $7?

Find each unit price: $4.50 ÷ 3 = $1.50 per pound and $7 ÷ 5 = $1.40 per pound. The 5-pound bag costs less per pound, so it is the better buy.

Why use unit rates to compare?

Unit rates put both options on the same footing: how much for exactly one hour or one pound. Then a single comparison of two numbers answers the question.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix comparing rates with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
