Worksheet variations

A larger unit is worth many smaller ones: 1 m = 100 cm, 1 km = 1000 m, 1 kg = 1000 g and 1 L = 1000 mL. To convert to the smaller unit, multiply; for a mixed measure, convert the large part and add the small part.

How to solve it: a worked example

Convert to the smaller unit.

  1. Start14 m = cm
  2. Then1 m = 100 cm
  3. Multiply by 10014 × 100 = 1400
  4. Answer1400 cm

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Dividing instead of multiplying when changing to a smaller unit.
  • Using 100 for every conversion, so 3 kg becomes 300 g.
  • In 4 m 5 cm, writing 45 cm for the small part instead of 405 cm overall.

FAQ

How do you convert 3 m 45 cm to centimetres?

Change the metres to centimetres and add the rest: 3 m = 300 cm, so 3 m 45 cm = 345 cm.

Why multiply when converting to a smaller unit?

A smaller unit fits more times into the same length, so the number gets bigger. 1 km is 1,000 m, so 4 km is 4 × 1,000 = 4,000 m.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix converting metric units with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
