Worksheet variations

To find the area, split the figure into two rectangles, find the area of each and add. To find the perimeter, first work out the two unlabelled sides from the sides you know: the top and the step together match the bottom, and the two right-hand pieces together match the left side. Then add all six sides.

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the area or perimeter of each figure.

  1. StartEach small square is 1 square centimetre. Find the area.6 cm5 cm3 cm2 cm
  2. Split it into two rectangles3 × 5 + 3 × 2 = 15 + 6

  4. Answer21 cm2

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplying the two longest sides, as if the figure were a whole rectangle.
  • Counting the overlap twice when splitting into rectangles.
  • Adding only the four labelled sides for the perimeter.

FAQ

How do you find the area of an L-shape?

Split it into two rectangles with one line, find each area, and add them. Different ways of splitting give the same total.

Why do some sides have no label?

The unlabelled sides can be worked out from the others: opposite sides of the whole shape add up. Finding them first is the key step for the perimeter.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix area and perimeter of l-shaped figures with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
