Worksheet variations

Compare from the biggest place: the number with more hundreds is greater. If the hundreds match, compare the tens, and if those match too, compare the ones. The open side of < or > faces the greater number.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Comparing the ones digits first, so 409 seems greater than 490.
  • Thinking 407 and 470 are equal because they use the same digits.
  • Writing the symbol backwards: the open side faces the greater number.

FAQ

How do you compare 482 and 428?

Start with the hundreds: both have 4. Then compare the tens: 8 tens is more than 2 tens, so 482 > 428. The ones don't matter once the tens differ.

Why can't you compare by the first digit you see that's bigger?

Because a large ones digit can't make up for fewer hundreds: 299 is less than 301 even though 9 is bigger than 1. Always compare from the left.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix comparing three-digit numbers with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
