Worksheet variations

Take half the coefficient of x and square it. Add and subtract that number so the first three terms make a perfect square, then tidy up the constant. When a isn't 1, factor it out of the x-terms first.

Easyx2 − 6x + 6x² + bx + c, even bMediumx2 − 3x − 5Odd b (fractions)Hard2x2 − 12x − 1a ≠ 1

How to solve it: a worked example

Complete the square to write each quadratic in vertex form, a(x − h)² + k.

  1. Startx2 − 10x − 7
  2. Half of the x-coefficient, squared(−102)2 = 25
  3. Add and subtract itx2 − 10x + 25 − 25 − 7
  4. Write the perfect square(x − 5)2 − 32
  5. Answer(x − 5)2 − 32

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Adding the square without subtracting it again, which changes the expression.
  • Using half of b without squaring it.
  • When a isn't 1, forgetting to multiply the subtracted square by a.

FAQ

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix completing the square with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
