Worksheet variations

Write the equation as ax² + bx + c = 0 and note a, b and c with their signs. Work out the discriminant b² − 4ac first: if it's a perfect square the roots are exact; otherwise round them.

Easyx2 − 2x − 8 = 0Exact (rational) rootsMediumx2 + 4x + 2 = 0a = 1, rounded rootsHard−3x2 − 6x + 10 = 0a ≠ 1, rounded roots

How to solve it: a worked example

Solve with the quadratic formula. Round to the nearest hundredth when the roots aren't exact.

  1. Startx2 + 7x − 8 = 0
  2. Discriminantb2 − 4ac = 72 − 4(1)(−8) = 81
  3. Quadratic formulax = −7 ± √812(1)
  4. Thenx = 1 or x = −8
  5. Answerx = 1 or x = −8

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Dropping the sign of b: with b = −5, −b is +5.
  • Dividing only the square root by 2a instead of the whole numerator.
  • Writing b² − 4ac as −4ac when b is negative: (−3)² is 9, not −9.

FAQ

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix the quadratic formula with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
