Worksheet variations

The rate of change m is the change in y divided by the change in x between two columns. The initial value b is y when x = 0: read it from the table, or work back from any column with b = y − m·x.

How to solve it: a worked example

Write the rule y = mx + b. Give the rate of change and the initial value.

  1. StartWrite a rule for the table in the form y = mx + b.x0123y−241016
  2. Rate of change: change in y over change in xm = 4 − (−2)1 − 0 = 6
  3. The initial value is y when x = 0b = −2
  4. Answery = 6x − 2rate of change 6, initial value −2

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using the change in y alone as the rate when x goes up by more than 1.
  • Reading the first y-value as the initial value when the table doesn't start at x = 0.
  • Losing the sign of a negative rate when working back to b.

FAQ

How do you find the rate of change from a table?

Divide the change in y by the change in x between any two rows. If x goes up by 2 and y goes up by 6, the rate is 6 ÷ 2 = 3.

What if the table doesn't include x = 0?

Work backward from a known row using the rate. If the rate is 3 and (2, 11) is in the table, then at x = 0, y = 11 − 2 × 3 = 5, so y = 3x + 5.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix linear functions from tables with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
