Worksheet variations

When two things happen together, count all the possible outcomes by multiplying: a coin and a number cube give 2 × 6 = 12 outcomes, and two number cubes give 6 × 6 = 36. Then count the outcomes that match the event. The probability is the matching outcomes over all outcomes.

EasyA coin is flipped and a number cube is rolled. What is the probability of getting tails and an even number?A coin and a number cubeMediumTwo number cubes are rolled. What is the probability that the sum is 3?The sum of two number cubesHardTwo number cubes are rolled. What is the probability that the sum is 10 or more?A sum of two number cubes or more

How to solve it: a worked example

Find each probability. Write it as a fraction in simplest form.

  1. StartA coin is flipped and a number cube is rolled. What is the probability of getting heads and an odd number?
  2. Count all the outcomes2 × 6 = 12
  3. Count the outcomes you want1 × 3 = 3
  4. Favourable outcomes over all outcomes312 = 14
  5. Answer14

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Adding the outcomes (2 + 6) instead of multiplying them.
  • Counting (2, 5) and (5, 2) as the same outcome.
  • Leaving the fraction unsimplified, or simplifying it wrongly.

FAQ

How do you count the outcomes of two number cubes?

Each cube has 6 outcomes, so the pair has 6 × 6 = 36 equally likely outcomes. A 6 × 6 table lists them all and makes counting sums easy.

Why is a sum of 7 the most likely?

Six of the 36 outcomes add to 7 (1 + 6, 2 + 5, 3 + 4, 4 + 3, 5 + 2, 6 + 1), more than any other sum, so P(7) = 6/36 = 1/6.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix probability of compound events with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
