Worksheet variations

The distributive property says a(b + c) = ab + ac. Read left to right, it lets you multiply in parts: 7 × 46 = 7 × 40 + 7 × 6. Read right to left, it factors a sum: 36 + 8 = 4 × 9 + 4 × 2 = 4(9 + 2).

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplying only the first part: 7 × (40 + 6) written as 280 + 6.
  • Factoring out a common factor that isn't the greatest, leaving a common factor inside the parentheses.
  • Writing 4(9 + 2) as 4 × 9 + 2.

FAQ

How does the distributive property help with mental math?

Split one factor into friendly parts and multiply each part: 6 × 38 = 6 × 30 + 6 × 8 = 180 + 48 = 228.

How do you write 24 + 40 using the GCF?

The GCF of 24 and 40 is 8, so 24 + 40 = 8 × 3 + 8 × 5 = 8(3 + 5).

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix distributive property with numbers with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
