Worksheet variations

Work out what the question is asking, then plan the steps: what must be found first? In division problems the remainder needs thought. If every person needs a seat, round up; if only full boxes count, drop the remainder; and sometimes the remainder itself is the answer.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Writing 7 R2 vans instead of 8 vans.
  • Rounding up when the question asks how many full boxes can be made.
  • Doing the steps in the wrong order, such as subtracting before multiplying.

FAQ

What do you do with the remainder in a word problem?

It depends on the question. If 30 students ride in vans of 8, you need 4 vans (round up). If 30 cookies are packed 8 to a box, you fill 3 boxes (drop it). Sometimes the remainder itself is the answer.

How can students organise a two-step problem?

Write what the first step finds, then use that result in the second step. A letter for the unknown, such as 5 × 12 − n = 38, makes the steps visible.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix multi-step word problems with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
