Worksheet variations

Expanded form writes a number as the sum of the values of its digits: 47,302 = 40,000 + 7,000 + 300 + 2. A digit 0 adds nothing, so it is left out of the sum, but going back to a number it must be written as a 0 to hold its place.

  • Writing the digits instead of their values, as in 4 + 7 + 3 + 2.

FAQ

How do you write 305,090 in expanded form?

Write each nonzero digit's value: 300,000 + 5,000 + 90. The zeros are skipped because they add nothing.

How do you go from expanded form back to a number?

Put each digit in its place and fill the missing places with zeros. 40,000 + 600 + 7 has no thousands or tens, so it is 40,607.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix expanded form of multi-digit numbers with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
