Worksheet variations

An estimate is a quick, close answer. Round each number to the place you are told, then do the easier calculation with the round numbers. Estimating is a good way to check whether an exact answer makes sense.

  • Rounding one number to the nearest 10 and the other to the nearest 100.
  • Rounding a halfway number such as 250 down.

FAQ

Why estimate instead of finding the exact answer?

Estimating gives a quick sense of the answer's size, which is useful when an exact answer isn't needed and for checking whether an exact answer is reasonable.

Should you round before or after adding?

Round each number first, then add or subtract the rounded numbers. Rounding after adding gives a rounded exact answer, which is a different thing.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix estimating sums and differences with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
