Worksheet variations

With interest compounded n times a year, A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt), where P is the starting amount, r the yearly rate as a decimal and t the number of years. With continuous compounding, A = Pe^(rt). Write the percent as a decimal first, and round only at the end.

Easy$5,400 is invested at 3.1% interest compounded yearly. Find the balance after 4 years.Compounded yearlyMedium$4,300 is invested at 3.6% interest compounded quarterly. Find the balance after 14 years.Quarterly and monthlyHard$4,700 is invested at 3% interest compounded continuously. Find the balance after 12 years.Continuously

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the balance. Round to the nearest cent.

  1. Start$5,700 is invested at 5% interest compounded yearly. Find the balance after 7 years.
  2. Write the rate as a decimal5% = 0.05
  3. Use A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt)A = 5700(1 + 0.051)1 × 7
  4. Evaluate and round to the nearest centA ≈ $8,020.47
  5. Answer≈ $8,020.47

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Using 5 instead of 0.05 for a 5% rate.
  • Raising to the power t instead of nt.
  • Rounding (1 + r/n) before raising it to the power.

FAQ

What do the letters in A = P(1 + r/n)ⁿᵗ mean?

P is the starting amount, r the yearly rate as a decimal, n the number of times interest is compounded each year, and t the number of years.

How is continuous compounding different?

It is the limit as interest is compounded more and more often, giving A = Peʳᵗ. It earns slightly more than monthly or daily compounding.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix compound and continuous interest with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
