Worksheet variations

The average rate of change from x = p to x = q is the change in the function divided by the change in x: (f(q) − f(p)) / (q − p). For a line it's the slope everywhere; for curves it depends on the interval.

Easyf(x) = 7x + 3, from x = 3 to x = 5Linear functionsMediumf(x) = 2x2 + x − 7, from x = 1 to x = 4Quadratic functionsHardf(x) = 4(2)x, from x = 1 to x = 4Exponential functions

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the average rate of change over the interval.

  1. Startf(x) = −6x + 6, from x = −1 to x = 1
  2. Find f at both endsf(−1) = 12, f(1) = 0
  3. Change in f over change in x0 − 121 − (−1) = −6
  4. Answer−6

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Dividing by the change in f instead of the change in x.
  • Subtracting in a different order on the top and the bottom.
  • Using the inputs instead of the outputs on the top.

FAQ

How is average rate of change related to slope?

It is the slope of the line through two points on the graph: (f(b) − f(a))/(b − a). For a linear function it is the same for every interval.

Why does a quadratic's rate change from interval to interval?

Its graph curves, so the line between two points gets steeper or flatter depending on where you measure. For f(x) = x², it is 1 from 0 to 1 but 5 from 2 to 3.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix average rate of change with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
