Worksheet variations

Let x stand for the quantity you don't know and write the other quantities in terms of x. Translate the story into one equation, solve it, and check the answer against the story. Consecutive integers are x, x + 1, x + 2; consecutive even or odd integers go up by 2.

Find the width and the length.Rectangles and perimeterHardTwo cars leave the same place at the same time and drive in opposite directions at 39 km/h and 52 km/h. After how many hours are they 182 km apart?Distance, rate and time

How to solve it: a worked example

Write an equation and solve it.

  1. StartThe sum of 3 consecutive odd integers is 135. Find the numbers.
  2. Write each integer in terms of xx + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 135
  3. Combine and solve3x + 6 = 135, x = 43
  4. Answer43, 45, 47

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Writing consecutive odd integers as x, x + 1, x + 3.
  • Using area instead of perimeter.
  • Subtracting the speeds when the cars move in opposite directions.

FAQ

How do you write consecutive integers?

Call the first one n; the next ones are n + 1 and n + 2. For consecutive even or odd integers, add 2 each time: n, n + 2, n + 4.

What should you check after solving?

That the answer fits the story: the integers really are consecutive and add to the total, or the rectangle's sides give the stated perimeter.

Is every worksheet different?

Yes. Numbers are generated each time, and the answer key is calculated for that sheet. Swap any single question and its answer updates too.

Can I mix linear equation word problems with other skills?

Yes. In the generator, add more skills; each gets its own section on the sheet with its own instructions.

Is it free to print?

Yes. Generating and printing from the browser is free with no sign-up. PDF downloads need a free account.
