The least common multiple is the smallest number that each number divides into evenly. It is the lowest common denominator when adding fractions.

How to solve it: a worked example

Find the least common multiple (LCM).

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Multiplying the numbers together, which gives a common multiple but not always the least.
  • Confusing the LCM with the GCF.
  • Missing a prime factor that appears in only one number.
