Worksheet variations

Sharing equally means the total length divided by the number of pieces. Find the total from the line plot first, then divide by how many X's there are.

How to solve it: a worked example

Use the line plot of ribbon lengths to answer.

  1. StartWhat is the total length of all the ribbons?01/81/43/81/2
  2. Multiply each length by its number of X's, then add1 × 18 + 2 × 28 + 2 × 38 + 1 × 48 = 158
  3. Answer178 m

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Counting the X's but forgetting to multiply by each length.
  • Adding denominators as well as numerators.
  • Dividing by the number of different lengths instead of the number of pieces.
